The scenic county has a beautiful aesthetic and a number of conservation areas which mean that loft conversions must follow stringent guidelines and be built to an extremely high standard. We are proud of our loft conversions throughout Dorking, Guildford, Redhill, Camberley, Farnham, and Epsom, and have a range of suppliers and tradesmen throughout the region to provide local experience and expertise.
Loft Conversions in Surrey Conservation Areas
Surrey is home to over 200 conservation areas, including historic towns and picturesque villages. This means that you may not be allowed to carry out the loft conversion as a permitted development, or it could mean that you have to use particular materials or avoid building a particular loft conversion type if it drastically alters the exterior of your house.
If you live one of Surrey’s conservation areas, we will work with you and the local council to help you get the added space that you need while working within the area’s requirements. It’s likely that you will not be allowed to have dormers, but you may be allowed to build a Velux loft conversion or maybe even a mansard. The key is to understand your local restrictions and work strictly within them.
Even if you do not live in a conservation area, you may require planning permission for our loft conversion. In most cases you should be able to create your conversion as a permitted development, but if any of the following apply to your home or plans it is likely that you will need to seek permission from your local authority:
- Your home already has permitted developments added (either by you or the previous owners)
- You plan to build a Mansard conversion
- You plan to add a balcony to the conversion
- You would like to build a conversion that does not blend in with the existing exterior of your home
