Planning Application and Ruler

Here are the answers to our most frequently asked questions about building a loft conversion in Essex.

Can My Essex Loft be Converted?

Most lofts in Essex can be converted. Building regulations are always required but planning permission will depend on the type of loft you are interested in. Loftworld has several years of experience building lofts in Essex. We speak openly with our customers about each stage of the building process. With each loft conversion, you will also receive expert plumbing and electrics that meet all regulations and energy requirements.

Do I Need Planning Permission For An Essex Loft Conversion?

It depends on the type of loft conversion that you are intending to build. If your conversion meets the requirements for a planned development than you most likely will not require planning permission. Each building has a set limit of permitted developments. It’s important to look into building history to see what has previously been added to the existing design.

For dormers and skylights that project more than 150mm from the existing roof plane, you will need to submit a planning application. Velux loft conversions do not alter the state of the existing roof; therefore, they usually don’t require planning permissions. Mansard loft conversions require a great deal of construction to the roof (though they offer the most headspace and room volume), therefore, they often require planning permission.

Where Do I Apply for Planning Permissions in Essex?

Planning applications for houses and businesses in Essex are applied for through local district and borough councils.

What if I Live in a Listed Building or Conservation Area?

If you live in a Conservation Area or a listed building then you will find additional rules and limits that are important to be mindful of. Conservation areas will require listed building consent as well as standard planning permission. Listed buildings will likely have some limits on the amount of change that you can make to the exterior of your home.
